Last night as I quilted until my eyes crossed, I listened to all the hub-bub surrounding the Reverend Al Sharpton's comments about Mormons. In case you haven't heard, or don't want to go to the link, he basically said that Mormon's don't really believe in God. The Reverend is an idiot. He has never had credibility in my book. The man is one big walking contradiction.
But I digress. This post is not about him. I don't want to talk about contradictions in this country, like how you can't say "I would never vote for a black man," but you can say "I would never vote for a Mormon." I don't want to talk about horrible documentaries on my faith, which are so terribly one sided and happen to air at the beginning of election season with a member of my faith running for President (thanks, government sponsored tv). No, I don't want to talk about that.
Today, the CSDQ wants to publicly endorse a candidate. I am throwing all my political and popular clout behind Mitt Romney. I don't like him just because he's a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don't like him just because he's good looking, or even just because he's a republican. I like him because he actually makes sense. I like his stance on stem-cell research. I like his track record as a governor, how he was able to turn a deficit into a surplus without raising taxes. This Tuesday I hope to hold a party in his honor while watching the debates. I hope Curly will let me. I hope you'll join us, and donate a buck or two to help this great man get the Republican nomination, and then the Presidency.

Well, since you brought it up... I didn't see the documentaries as "horrible" or "one-sided". I thought they were pretty multi-faceted, and I really liked them. I think a diverse audience could relate to the various messages that were conveyed, and in my community and that of some of my friends, we had a lot of great gospel conversations result from the documentary.
On another note, I am not sure if calling a noted African-American an idiot and comparing the Mormon religion to his race (in the "I would never's" section), is doing much to help Mitt Romney's campaign...but I will still research him. I am intrigued by your comment about stem-cell research, I enjoy reading about that topic very much. I am also extremely interested in Obama....I think it will come down to those two for me....and maybe a little Hillary in there. I think this campaign is going to be a really exciting one...it's about time right?
So it's okay to discriminate because of religion, but not okay because of race?
jlk, I assume your question is meant for me since I am the only commenter, even though I didn't state that discrimination against a religion is okay. I think discrimination in all forms is unfortunate, and I don't think it's okay.
I plan on judging the candidates on their individual merit as opposed to their affiliations with a particular class, race, or political party.
On another note, I think it's fun that you are so behind a candidate...that will make the race really intense for you to be full force behind a candidate at such an early stage, I have another friend with the same passions.
I know of an active homosexual member of the LDS church who was interviewed by PBS for the documentary. He is willing to live a celibate lifestyle in order to remain in complete fellowship with the church. His comments, however, ended up on the cutting room floor. His point of view, of being accepted by the church though he is gay, would have added balance to the program.
Check out this article. That will be interesting meeting...
